Marching Toward a Purpose

He followed his talent to the University. Now, he’s a small business owner with big ties to student success.

Steve Leonard ’72, M’80 has been helping move West Chester University forward since 1971, when Dr. James R. Wells ’54 asked him to run the school’s first-ever Color Guard. He’s written half-time shows for the Incomparable Golden Rams Marching Band — of which he was a member — and has worked at the Band’s summer camps.

A self-professed music man, he’s also involved in community theater and the Philadelphia Boys Choir & Men’s Chorale. “So much of what I’ve done and enjoyed has involved music, and that began at West Chester,” he says.

At the University’s Wells School of Music, an honorary plaque commemorates Steve and his wife, Liz, for their contribution in 2006 to support the construction of the Swope Music Building.

Fifteen years later, Steve is still singing his praise for WCU — and he’s continued his support. He currently serves on the Wells School of Music Advisory Board, and, with Liz, on the Presidential Scholarship Gala Planning Committee.

“I’m hopeful that my loyalty and commitment will elicit gratitude,” says Steve.

“Opportunities to travel — like participating in the New York Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade — are usually supported by donor money. Maybe that will become the motivation for current students to eventually give back.”

As president and founder of local Jobsite Products, Inc. Steve recognizes how the education he received at WCU has helped him to excel on his own.

“Being a small business owner has made it possible for me to make a larger and continuous donation,” he says. “Being in the West Chester area gives my wife and me opportunities to visit the campus and attend events.”

Working with West Chester University Foundation, Steve directs his funds to support the Marching Band — or wherever the money is needed most.

“It’s always rewarding to see students excelling and performing.”
